DESCRIPTION
The ski route through Akshayuk Pass, in Auyuittuq National Park goes through some of the most stunning scenery in the Canadian Arctic. The views of Mount Thor, which has the tallest vertical face in the world, and Mount Asgard are incredible. This is one of the best ski tours in the Canadian Arctic, it includes skiing on sea ice, overland through a steep walled canyon, past the base of Thor and Asgard, and down a frozen river. Temperatures could get down to –20°F or colder, but would likely be warmer. The possibility of extreme windstorms exist. The travel route goes through Iqaluit the largest town on Baffin Island, a layover there is possible to enjoy side trips. The sun is still setting at this time of year making for long sunny days with gorgeous evenings. Travel will be expedition style. Participants will sleep in tents and haul sleds with all the necessary gear and food.
ITINERARY (approximate):
Day 1: Fly to Ottawa, Ontario overnight stay
Day 2: Fly to Iqaluit, Nunavut, overnight stay for 2 nights
Day 4: Fly to Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut. Snowmobile to park entrance
Days 4-13: Ski through park to Pangnirtung, Nanuvut (10 days)
Day 14: Fly from Pangnirtung to Iqaluit, overnight or continue to Ottawa
